Celebrating Black History Month…with the pastry fork

On March 1, 1892 the special version of the pastry fork was patented by Ms. Anna M. Mangin.  Designed to cut together butter and flour to create pie crusts and cookies, the pastry fork was a tool to use without involving your hands to physically manipulate the ingredients.  The utensil could also be used to beat eggs and mash other food items.

Looks like an open slotted spatula huh?  It was be made of iron, steel, wood or any other suitable material.  The pastry fork allowed the ingredients to mix and pass through freely and was also designed to thoroughly cut and pulverize the dry pastry.

Luckily with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, African-Americans could finally receive patents on their inventions.  So many never gained recognition for their achievements prior.  Some never wanted to be identified, believing their nationality or sex would hinder the rise and success of their inventions.

Well, I am proud of my ancestors and their inventions, patented or not, named or unnamed.  There are so many tools we use today because of them and I am forever baking-liciously thankful 🙂

The Flavor Table

The Eagle and I came across this (BO) business by accident called The Flavor Table. They’re located on Florence.  So we went in and tried their breakfast.  It was cool.  The price didn’t bother me and the decor fit their theme, a Louisiana feel.  They have the typical photos on the wall, beads in the corner, flowers on the table, everything is red and purple and the waiters are pleasant offering great customer service.  They offer catering, take out, no reservations, there’s street parking and you’ll pay a typical $12 for your meal.  Oh and I’ve only been there twice and I just learned they have a little patio eating area in the back.  I’ll try it out next time whenever I’m around.  I think I saw about three tables back there surround by umbrellas and additional covering for added privacy.  Simple area for a small group of maybe 10 who want some fresh air and privacy.  Keep in mind it’s in a residential area.

So the first time I went there I ordered the Peach Cobbler French Toast.  I thought it was going to be smothered in yummy sauce with juicy peaches, but instead they offered the cobbler in a side dish and the french toast on its own plate.  I was a little disappointed.

Pictured above is what I ordered the second time we visited.  It’s their Caramel French Toast.  Maybe I’m asking for too much but I could have used a tad more of a thicker sauce or syrup.  It was simply caramel poured on top.  So they lack creativity, but the food was still good enough for myself to return in time.

The Eagle usually gets items such as rice, eggs and salmon croquettes of which I guess I need to learn how to make.  This is his plate pictured to the left.  He said he really enjoyed his Shrimp and Crab Omelet.  I was pleased for I hate to have him upset with his meal.  It cost about $17.

 

 

 

All and all the place is fine.  If you’re in the area, try them out for yourself.  I may not drive across town just to eat here, but if in the area I would definitely continue to support.

Eat’n Park Memories

It’s Eat’n Park Christmas Star Commercial time

The Eagle and I actually took a trip to the Burgh to visit some folk and before making our way to the airport, guess where we stopped?  OMG how did you know?  You got it – Eat’n Park!

Oh how I remember the days of a child eating away and if lucky walking out with a little treat.  As I have gotten older, we would always go to Eat’n Park right before my road trip back to good ole Ohio.  It was ‘our thing’!   I tell ya, there’s nothing like cheap, pathetic, warm, restaurant chain food to put a smile on your face before a road trip. LOL

What all was on the menu for the day?  Well, I honestly don’t remember what The Eagle ordered, but I know I went for the buffet.  Now, lets pause for a sec.  You do understand what kind of place this is?  Think of such chains as Denny’s, Big Boy, IHOP, etc so lets not get our nose too high up in the air.  Bring it down some and enjoy the lower side of life <chuckle> You know, the common folk.  Besides, it makes you appreciate the really, really good stuff 🙂  Now, I had two plates LOL one consisted of mini waffles, eggs, potatoes while the second plate was compiled of grits, biscuits and gravy and yes, bread pudding OF WHICH I FREAKING LOVE!!!  How did it taste?  You know, average chain food.  Am I kicking and screaming to return soon?  No, but it’s a place I respect for what it is…cheap food.  So, I’ve learned to find a place in my heart for it 🙂

And speaking of things I love – THE SMILEY FACE COOKIES!!!  Anyone who’s anyone knows about the smiley face cookies.  And they know it’s almost tradition to purchase one or some on the way out.

<big sigh> Oh I see the commercial now so clear.  (sit back and close your eyes…ok well keep one eye open to keep reading I guess)  SO, it starts off with a plain christmas tree all alone.  Oh look, a little star all by his lonesome too, just bouncing about.  The star makes his way over trying to be apart of tree but can’t reach the top.  OK – OK here’s the Hallmark moment.  Wait for it, Wait for it.  The tree then bends over and helps the star get to the top of the tree then BAM! The tree lights up and becomes a beautifully lit Christmas tree THE END!  (go to youtube to watch if you feel left out)

Breakfast in Chicago :)

I love my Eagle so much.  (He’s the boyfriend remember)  Well, he took us to Chicago simply to dine at varied restaurants for my blog…ok fine and to also visit family.  We literally visited a new spot each day for every meal of the day <sigh of gratitude> HE’S AMAZING! (picture me smiling, doing turning paddle turns while tossing confetti)

First up was Batter & Berries.  This (B.O.) spot was and is a “must visit”.  Known for their french toast, I decided to order the ‘Flight of French Toast’ which is their sample platter offering four-five varied flavors such as (in photo order) Taffy Apple, Lemon Curd, Caramel Pecan, Strawberry and Blueberry.

Diving For Food!

So there’s this place called Tart over on Fairfax if ever in Hollywood.  It’s a restaurant attached to a colorful, cool, LA vibe hotel.  Jenise told us about it and so we all made the trip.

Talk about a photographers heaven…for me anyway.  The door to the right leads you into the hotel lobby.  This entrance I’ve captured is the door on the left, the restaurant.  As you enter it becomes a little dark.  There’s a bar with additional table seating placed around the room.  As you follow the path of curiosity to the right, it quickly leads you to their outdoor seating. This is located central of the hotel and restaurant.

IMG_1132.JPGBesides the check-in counter, the hotel entrance has a tiny boutique, large coffee table with art decor inspiration books and appropriate themed dust collectors representing farming or gardening.  The doors to the left lead you to the outdoor eating area as mentioned above.  Directly to the right was their little swimming pool with yellow rubber duckies preparing to outline the water.IMG_1139.JPG

“Where to sit?” was the question of the moment.  So many choices.  For us, simply a party of three, we really didn’t need the horse shoe of benches topped with black and white pillows and large coffee table to hold everyone’s plates.   Maybe next time.
